Frequently Asked Questions

General

Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite navigation system providing location and time information anywhere where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. It is maintained by the United States government and is freely accessible to anyone with a GPS receiver.

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications, originally Groupe Spécial Mobile), is a standard set developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to describe technologies for second generation (2G) digital cellular networks.

Roadmaster vehicle tracking solutions combine sophisticated GPS tracking technology with flexible, advanced mapping and reporting software. A GPS-enabled Vehicle Tracking Device is installed on each vehicle to collect and transmit tracking data via a cellular or satellite network, whichever works best for your operations. The device then delivers the data to the RM hosted application, which you can access through the Web at any time. You receive real-time vehicle tracking updates, including location, direction, speed, idle time, start/stop and more, allowing you to manage a tighter schedule and more efficient fleet.

Each GPS record consists of the following (Basic Packet which is transmitted by tracking device):

  • Date
  • Time
  • Location
  • Speed
  • Direction of travel
  • Sensor Value

You will be provided with an online account and given a personal login and password of your choice. You will also be given the website address of your GPS tracking website. A computer with a working standard Internet browser is required to login and locate your vehicle.

GPS tracking alerts are unique limits that a customer can set up for their tracked vehicle. When the limit is broken, an SMS is sent to the customer. If a speed limit, for example, is broken, the customer will be notified. Depending on which GPS vehicle tracking system or service plan the customer chooses, they will be alerted to these types of occurrences.

GPS/Location

Vehicle location may either be incorrectly reported sometimes or off by a few meters because the availability and quality of GPS signals may be affected by buildings, natural obstacles, weather conditions and satellite availability.

The unit transmits its location in near real-time intervals and it depends on customer requirement.

The vehicle device has functions to alert you of such situations. If vehicle battery power is disconnected, it will send you an SMS alert. Finally, if our Application Server does not receive data from the vehicle device, we alert you about this and send in our personnel to check.

From time to time you will find yourself travelling through areas that don’t have any network coverage, when this happens the most GPS units will automatically store the vehicle tracking information and send it when your driver re-enters the coverage area.
